Naloxone helped save my husband’s life!
Being around the medical field for most of my adult life, I have seen the effects that opioids and other drugs can have on people. More and more stories are being shared in the media recently, like the recent overdose of pop star Demi Lovato. I’ve seen my share of overdoses as well, but I never thought it would hit so close to home as it did recently.
Caswell Family Medical Center has recently been handing out Naloxone kits to those who wish to take them home. Most of the people who take them know someone who is on prescription opioid medication, or they have opioid medication at home and want the Naloxone in case their children get ahold of it accidentally.
The Naloxone kit is basically Narcan, the medication designed to quickly reverse opioid overdoses. The kit comes in the form of a nasal spray that you spray into the victim’s nostrils to reverse the effects of the drugs causing the overdose in their system. I took a kit home with me to have on hand just in case I needed to use it since my husband has had a history with opioids and other drugs.
One evening recently, horror set in as I found my husband unresponsive in his truck. He was turning blue. My nursing instincts kicked in and I was able to revive him with the Naloxone and keep him that way until the EMT arrived. I’m very glad I took the opportunity to get this free Naloxone kit because it ended up saving my husband’s life.
Had I not had the Naloxone from Caswell Family Medical Center, my husband probably wouldn’t be here today. Because of this, I would recommend everyone have a kit on-hand in the event a tragic occurrence like this happens to them.
If you or a loved one take prescription opioid medication or have a history of legal and/or illegal opioids, stop by CFMC to pick up a free Naloxone kit. It may just save a life! Call 336-694-9331 today for more information.
